Schwinns Tailwind The Fastest-Charging Electric Bike in the World
Will be Available in Stores Starting this January

The Tailwind (MSRP $3,199), Schwinns latest electric bike, will be showcased at the Consumer
Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas (Jan. 8-11, 2009), and will be available through
Independent Bike Dealers (IBDs) throughout North America before February 2009

BETHEL, Conn. Jan. 08, 2009 Schwinn Bicycles, Americas most recognized bicycle brand, today announced that its Tailwind electric bike (the fastest charging electric bike in the world) will be available for purchase beginning later this month at Independent Bicycle Dealers (IBDs) throughout the United States. Schwinn Bicycles is part of the Cannondale Sports Group Division of Dorel Industries (TSX: DII.B, DII.A).

The Tailwind represents the next generation of eBikes and will be on exhibit this week (Jan. 8-11) at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas at the Sands Convention Center (Booth s4840). The Tailwind features the worlds fastest-charging battery a battery built by electronics giant, Toshiba Corporation; in fact, the Tailwind was the first product in the world to use Toshibas new SCiB technology.

Toshibas SCiB power technology will enable Tailwind owners to recharge their eBike in 30 minutes
through a standard electrical outlet (or as little as five to seven minutes through a commercial charger).
By comparison, it takes approximately four hours or longer to fully recharge the battery of virtually any other eBike in use today through a standard electrical outlet, allowing riders to recharge their Tailwind eBike in one-eighth (1/8th) the time of other electric bikes.

"Weve seen tremendous growth in the eBike market in the last couple years, and expect the Tailwind will break out to lead the pack as it incorporates the latest battery technology in a very sleek and stylish electric bicycle," said Bruno Maier, Executive Vice President of Marketing for the Cannondale Sports Group. "Initially we are starting out with a smaller inventory in the U.S., but we plan to grow the number of eBikes available to IBDs throughout the year to meet what we will expect will be a growing demand."

Details on the Schwinn Tailwind eBike
The Tailwind (like all Schwinn electric bicycles) is a so-called eBike hybrid and can be ridden in either motor-assist mode or as a conventional bike. The eight-speed Tailwind utilizes a lightweight, Schwinn-designed 6000 series aluminum alloy frame and an SR Suntour NEX-4610 suspension fork with lock-out.

The electric motor in the Tailwind is housed in the hub of the front wheel, an innovation found in all Schwinn eBike models. In addition, all Schwinn eBike models (including the Tailwind) utilize the Plug N Drive removable battery pack which is built into stylishly designed rear bike rack systems, allowing riders to quickly detach the battery for recharging.

It is projected that owners will realize an industry leading 2,000 (minimum) recharge cycles with the Tailwind electric bicycle versus the industry standard of 600 1,000 charges before needing to replace the battery. Tailwind riders will also find they can ride 25 to 30 miles per charge (depending upon such factors as climate, rider weight and terrain). The Tailwind also comes with a 20,000-mile or two-year limited warranty.

According to the Electric Bikes Worldwide Report, 2008 Update, sales of electric bikes are growing quite rapidly in several markets around the world, including the United States and Europe. For example, U.S. eBike sales projected to hit 220,000 units in 2009, a two-year sales increase of 83 percent from U.S. eBike sales of 120,000 units in 2007. In Europe, the projections are even more impressive: 750,000 eBike sales forecast for 2009 up from sales of 250,000 units in 2007 a three-fold increase.

The program cost was $1,516,000, and funding was raised through the bicycle industry, foundations, and individuals.

Due to the success of Project Tsunami, World Bicycle Relief has begun a major project in Zambia, Africa. This will be a 26,000 bike program whose objectives are to multiply the efforts of healthcare workers and educators fighting the ravages of HIV/AIDS.

World Bicycle Reliefs activities:
Provide expertise, and, in some cases, funding to major projects in disaster relief and poverty relief. The expertise is in specifying and sourcing bicycles in support of existing projects and partners on the ground. The funding is raised through the bicycle industry, foundations, and individuals.
Develop and make available an archive of Africa bicycle sourcing and best-practices to enable other government and non-government organizations implementation of their own bicycle support programs.
Design and implement bicycle maintenance training and spare parts programs in the field that ensure sustainability and scalability of bicycle programs.
Measure and evaluate impact or Return on Investment (ROI) of bicycle programs in support of Disaster and Poverty Relief efforts, then make data and analysis available to all relief organizations.

Schwinn Presents Diabetes Fundraisers with New Road Bikes

Stratton's son, Kevin, was the 2007 event's top fundraiser. Kevin was also the 2006 event's top fundraiser, and had won a bike from Schwinn in '06 for his efforts, so he donated his prize to his father, also a Tour de Cure participant.

Pluke's Tour de Cure team raised the most funds per person, and Pluke won a drawing among his team members to take home the prize Schwinn.

The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading 501(C)3 nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Tour de Cure is a series of cycling events held in more than 80 cities nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association.

The Tour is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. Whether you ride 10 miles or 100 miles, you'll travel a route supported from start to finish with rest stops, food to fuel your journey and fans to cheer you on!

UW Collegiate Cycling Team Race Report II

First of all I just want to say it was an EPIC race weekend, with Wisconsin scoring massive amounts of points and qualifying a team for nationals. Great job everyone and good luck to those traveling to Kansas.

Also, it was great to see in the road race on Saturday that three of our guys, Darren Corrao, Lucas Boehm, and Mike Retzlaff had arrived early and chalked every single UW rider's name onto the final climb to the finish. Great too see!

Men's D:

In the road race on Saturday, John Steinich was sitting in position for a top 10 when the cop at the corner failed to direct the group he was in. The detour led then on a 26 mile lap instead of 14! Meanwhile, Matt Miller and Lucas Boehm were in a break off the front, finishing in in a sprint grabbing 2nd and 3rd, Ryan Luellwitz finishing in 11th and Bennett Heinze in 16th. John Steinich, Jesse Bond and Ryan Luellwitz moved up to Men's C's for the TTT and rode strong, finishing in 5th place.

On Sunday in the crit, John Steinich got in a break of about 7. On the final lap Lucas Boehm asked for a leadout from fellow teammate, John who led him out for a first place sprint finish, John finishing in 7th. Great teamwork! Ryan Luellwitz and Bennett Heinze also worked hard and finished great in 12th and 14th.

Men's C:

The road race was a challenging race with attacks flying after the final climb on the first lap. Josh Fangman and Darren Corrao made the selection with 2 Purdue riders, a Milwaukee rider, and a Mizzou rider. The break held the rest of the race with Josh leading Darren out on the final climb to sprint to a 3rd place finish, and Josh in 5th. Alex Viana came in a top ten finish scoring more points for Madison, followed by Chase Kincaid in 24th, Jesse Bond in 27th and Zac Labby in 37th. Great job by all in a field of around 50!

In the TTT, Josh Fangman, Alex Viana, Zac Labby, and Darren Corrao took 2nd. Everyone worked really hard and it was great to see that kind of teamwork.

In the crit, our guys tried to set the pace really high, especially on the uphill to string out the race and get a UW win. Once again they had some really good organization with a line of UW riders at the front of the pack heading into the last few laps. Unfortunately on the final sprint, there was a collision in the pack. Luckily, nobody went down and Josh was able to sprint to 4th place. Alex and Darren got 9th and 10th, Jesse Bond in 18th, Chase Kincaid in 20th and Zac Labby in 22nd

Alex and Darren moved up and did the Bs crit after their race and claim the B's race to be much more squirrely. Both of them finished in the B's field.

Men's B:

In Saturdays road race, Spencer Tweed, Julio Jacobo, Warren Lyman and Charlie Brummitt got caught in a nasty crash on the third and final lap, though fortunately, none suffered major injuries. On the final lap there was a selection on the last climbs and Frye and Jon Cook hung on, claiming that it was a real squirrel fest. There was a guy up the road that broke with 10 to go and he won. Frye hung onto Jon's wheel and they placed 1st and 2nd in the sprint, 2nd and 3rd overall. Bryan Fosler finished in 19th, Warren Lyman in 30th, Julio Jacobo 32nd, Charlie Brummitt 33rd, Spencer Tweed 34th and Jon Camp (GEO) in 38th. Geo, late in the race, coming upon Spencer and Charlie soft-pedaling due to their crash, went be them in, "my best TT position, I yelled out "NEVER GIVE UP!!! NEVER SURRENDER!!!!!!!!" and they totally jumped onto the pain-train and we rode as fast as possible to the finish."

In the TTT our B's guys busted their butts, finishing in 3rd place! Another team of Charlie and two D's riders finished 7th.

Sunday's crit was another epic race for the men's B field, "It was an amazing experience to have my last race be with such a talented group of riders and amazing friends that have taught me so much about the sport. Though I had to do a bit of cyclocross and a couple of times I was pretty sure I was going to get taken out it was still one of the best athletic moments of my life. -- Alex Viana on Sunday's Men's B crit. The crit was fast with some attacks going off the front. Charlie Brummitt and Jon Cook attacked a few times during the race and Julio Jacobo had a strong attack with about 3 laps to go. Two riders bridged up to Julio and eventually passed him leaving him drifting back toward the pack in "no mans land" and Tank decided that he wanted to go for the sprint win. Frye and Jon led him out for a fifth place finish in his last race. Bryan Fosler, Spencer Tweed and Jon Camp all scored prime points. Geo maintained crash free all season, "It was on the very last lap, of m y very last collegiate race ever, of the first season in which I haven't crashed yet ... and me and a guy from IU collide." Luckily, he somehow shook the IU rider from his derailleur and stayed upright, finishing in 15th. Bryan Fosler finished in 9th place, Charlie Brummitt in 14th, Nick Frye 16th, Alex Viana 24th, Darren Corrao 25th, Spencer Tweed 27th, Jon Cook 33rd, Julio Jacobo 34th and Joe Comer 35th.

Bryan Fosler, Nick Frye and Julio Jacobo also raced in the Men's A field to gain some experience for next season.

Men's A:

Men's A's road race was a very challenging race! As Dallas Fowler says, "A course meant for MTB riders and those who can climb and both pairs of my legs stayed home in bed." Before the last lap Dallas got up to Steve Scholzen, who is in contention with an MSU rider for the overall conference champion spot, and listened as Steve let him know they were staying on Greg the whole race. They did a great job and Steve sprinted to a 2nd place finish, one ahead of the MSU rider, Greg Christian. Jason Carr came in 21st, Erik Bean 22nd, Dallas Fowler 25th, Corey Behrens 26th and Richard Hatch 42nd.

Men A's TTT they finished strong in 3rd place, only 4 seconds behind the first place finishers.

Men A's crit, the first half the average speed was above 28 below 31 and finished with a 26.5 average for the whole race. The whole team worked well covering attacks. Matt Waite came up with a big move just in time to cover Greg's move, at this time Steve Scholzen being only 14 points behind him in the standings. Jason Carr and Corey Behrends blocked Greg. Bryan Fosler, after already racing in the B's field, put in a move and Carr sent Dallas Fowler to the front a few times. They were at the front to help at crucial moments helping Steve to win the sprints at least twice, and a huge move on the front at the end to string the whole pack out in the last lap. Going into the last lap of the crit, Steve had racked up enough prime points to put him and Greg dead even in the conference standings. Steve finished in a solid 7th place, Greg falling well behind him. Congrats to Steve on being the conference champion! Corey Behrends rolled in 32nd, Jason Carr 42nd, Dallas Fowler 46th.

Women's B:

In the road race, Kelley Hess raced in her first ever road race and flew in to a sprint finish strong and in 2nd place! Pam Foy finished soon after in 5th, both ladies scoring huge points for the team!

The two girls toughed it out alone in a TTT and finished second there as well.

On Sunday in the crit, Kelley took the win, scoring second in the first prime and winning the three following. Pam finished strong in 8th place. Great job girls!

Women's A:

The road race started off well with Jessie Duppler, Yvonne Schumacher and Brianna Cash working together pretty well and staying toward the front of the pack. The hill effectively broke up the pack every time around and almost had the girls exhausted by the end, but they all hung in there and finished with style. Yvonne even managed to comment that the hill had nothing on our driveway at NOC over spring break. Yvonne finished in 9th, Jessie in 17th, Ashley Simon in 24th.

The girls started out well in the TTT, unfortunately they had a crash and lost Brianna early on. Simultaneously, Yvonne Schumacher dropped my chain on the same hill and almost fell over. Jessie and Ashley were real troopers that kept on going, but Yvonne worked hard and ended up catching them and the girls placed sixth.

The field split up right from the gun, but the Wisconsin girls, with the addition of Kelley Hess after her win in the Bs field, pulled each other (and about 10 other girls) back up to the front group. They worked hard all race and worked together as a team. There was also a lot of communication between the four of them, which was fantastic. With two laps to go Kelley takes off with Yvonne on her wheel. Jessie was in the field was trying to get a Wisco/Indiana block going. Shortly thereafter, Yvonne came around Kelley and sprinted for a 2nd place finish! Kelley finished in 14th, Jessie in 17th, Ashley in 19th. Great job girls. -Maija DiSalvo

Schwinn Aerosport Named Best Cruiser By Bicycling Magazine

They Schwinn Aerosport was given the 2007 Editor's Choice award for Best Cruiser by Bicycling Magazine.

Here's what they had to say:

UW Collegiate Cycling Team Race Report

WOMEN'S A:

The road race was a tough and hilly one with Ashley Simon, Jessie Duppler and Yvonne Schumacher working hard in the A's field! Ashley and Jessie rode 35 of their 50 miles together, working together very well. Having recently upgraded, the girls are noticing the difference between not only riding hard but riding smart, and they're doing great. Ashley also pointed out the fact that Jessie is, "probably the best freestyle vocalist I've ever met on the cycling team. We created this really awesome chant to keep us from going mental in our RR Saturday."

The crit on Sunday was another tough day for those three and they were joined by Holly Liske. The girls placed in a couple of the primes, Holly placing 5th in one of them and Yvonne winning another. They all finished in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th scoring points for UW. Great Job girls.

WOMEN'S B:

In the road race on Saturday, the three girls, Amelia Barber, Allie Taylor and Pam Foy worked hard all the way, finishing 1, 2, 3! The girls worked together great and left all their competitors in the dust.

In the crit on Sunday, Amelia did a great job working for Pam and Maija DiSalvo and the final placing was 2nd, 3rd, and 4th with all three girls placing in every one of the primes. Great teamwork once again!

MEN'S D:

The UW Men's D field on Saturday was composed of Matt Miller, Lucas Boehm, Mike MacFarland, Sam Brummitt, Joel Hans, Ryan Luellwitz, Jon Steinich and Bennett Heinze. This was Joel and Jon's first race, Jon riding a road bike for the first time on Friday, and from the sounds of it they really had a great time! Joel had a mechanical issue, dropping his chain early on but jumped back into the race, passing guys left and right, dropping his chain a SECOND time, but still working hard and finishing strong. Matt finished the race in 2nd, just behind the leader and Lucas close behind him in 3rd. Mike came in 6th, Sam 9th, Joel, 12th, Ryan 14th, Jon 16th and Bennett 20th!

On Sunday the same guys were racing with the addition of Jake Jasurda. Mike, Jake and Lucas worked hard to stay on the wheel of Stevens Point as he pushed the pace. Mike and Jake hopped on behind N Mich as he attacked and finished 2nd and 3rd. Lucas finished 6th, Bennett 13th, Jon 14th, Ryan 15th, Sam 17th and Joel 18th.

MEN'S C:

Darren Corrao, Max Cayo, Eric Lau, Chase Kincaid, Alex Viana, Brandon Storlie, Warren Lyman, Marty Gresun, Todd VandeKreeke, Mark Kaeppler, Patrick Heath, and Jesse Bond all rocked the house for UW in the Men's C race on Saturday. The guys tried some attacks, but none ended up sticking, so it was left to the field sprint for the finish. Darren, Max, Eric, Chase and Alex all finished in the top twelve to score points for the team. It was a large field and everyone did great!

The Sunday crit was another fast, hard race for Men's C. They again tried a number of attacks and ended in a field sprint. Alex crashed midway through but got back on and finished the race. Jesse Bond, Josh Fangman, Alex Bird, Mark Kaeppler, Alex Viana, Darren Corrao, Chase Kincaid, Eric Lau, and Patrick Heath all competed, again having 4 guys (Jesse, Josh, Alex Bird and Mark) finishing in the top 12 to score points. We also racked up some prime points, so great job guys. This was the first collegiate race for Alex Bird, who had a great time and wishes he had raced more!

MEN'S B:

The B's road race was definitely a hard one! The attacks started going after the first lap, first one from Geo, then Northwestern, more UW riders, and Marian. Two Northwestern riders got off the front for the whole race. Our own Dave Madden bridged up to them at one point, but was bored and drifted back to the peloton. Mike Retzlaff took a long pull, wearing himself out and falling off the back, only to chase back on later in the race. UW worked together and got Jon Cook off the front to chase the break, sprinting past them in the finish to win the race! He was followed by UW riders, Craig Schuettpelz in 8th, Dave Madden in 16th, Mike Retzlaff in 18th, Jon Camp (Geo) in 22nd, Nick Frye in 23rd and Joe Comer in 25th.

Sunday's crit resulted in 4 riders finishing in the top 10! Charlie Brummitt tried numerous attacks, finishing in 11th, swerving around Cameron Wilcox in the final turn. Geo, Mike, Charlie and Jon kept flying off the front throughout the race, but it came down to the fieldsprint. Mike finished in 5th, Craig in 7th, Julio Jacobo in 8th, Charlie 11th, Nick 12th, Joe Comer 16th, Bryan Fosler 17th, Geo 19th. Great job and great teamwork guys!

MEN'S A:

Saturday's road race was very exciting for the Men's A field. Ryan Baumann went on a break during the first lap with Milwaukee and Illinois and it stuck for the entire 70 mile race! On the last lap, Ryan broke away from the other two and sprinted in to a first place finish! Steve Scholzen gave a solid effort in the uphill sprint finish to secure 4th place, winning the field sprint. Richard Hatch finished in 17th, Jason Carr 20th and Matt Waite 26th.

Sunday's crit was an interesting race with attacks going off like crazy, none of which could stick throughout the whole race! Michigan State went off in the final lap, winning the race, Steve Scholzen winning his second field sprint of the weekend for a 2nd place overall finish. Corey Behrends finished in 19th, Dallas Fowler in 27th and Matt Waite in 28th. Great job guys!

Team Rwanda, the first-ever national Rwandan cycling team, is the result of Project Rwanda, a philanthropic initiative that Pacific Cycle and Schwinn also support. Team Rwandas inaugural U.S. race is the upcoming Tour of the Gila in New Mexico.

Little 500 Riders on Schwinn Again in 2007

Schwinn Bicycles is pleased to be the exclusive supplier of bikes for the Indiana University Student Foundations fabled Little 500 race in 2007. Now in its 57th year, the Little 500 is arguably the most famous bike race in the nation and will take place on April 20 and 21, 2007.

Schwinn is pleased to be providing bikes to the event yet again, said Schwinn Senior Marketing Manager Chris Holmes. Schwinn provided the first bikes to the Little 500 back in 1951, and its great to have IU students riding Schwinns in 2007.

Built to the Indiana University Student Foundations rigid specifications, the Little 500 Schwinn features an aluminum 700c frame thats available to students in two sizes. Kore provides the alloy drop bar, stem and I-Beam post & saddle while Sun handles the double wall alloy rims and Kenda the custom tires. Because Little 500 bikes have always been single-speed and coaster brake-equipped, the rear hub is a Shimano coaster brake. The setup of these Schwinn bikes allows for truly unique exchanges that riders have to do when receiving the bike in the pits. The bikes are only available to IU undergraduate students that participate in the event. Schwinn does not offer the model to the general public.

Were pleased and honored to work with Schwinn as our bike supplier, said Matthew Ewing, Assistant Director of the Indiana University Student Foundation and Little 500 Race Coordinator. A race thats as iconic as the Little 500 is well matched to a heritage brand like Schwinn.

Racers will compete in either 100 or 200 lap races in IUs Bill Armstrong Stadium. Teams can be comprised of up to four IU undergraduate student riders with bike exchanges happening in assigned pits. Over 20,000 fans will attend the mens and womens races over the two day event.

I slid out early this morning, before the ice arrived. Here's a shot from out here in San Jose.

So I got here to the hotel about 1:00, put the bike together and headed downtown to the convention center. I'd brought along one of those mini pumps which was a complete failure at putting more than about 60# in the tires. I had a Schrader adapter in my seat bag so I just figgered to hit the 1st gas station. I'm about 4 blocks from the hotel and I had my foot on the curb looking at a map when two guys pull up to the light in a white GTI with a Pegoretti on the rack.

The passenger asks "you need anything? Lost?"

I say "No, just lookin' at the map, but is there a gas station along here somewhere? I just flew in and the dang mini pump didn't work very well."

He say "Hey, no problem we got a floor pump" and he pulls over and pumps up my tires.

"Not much of a Madison with all this space here." as he sweeps his hand between the front tire and the downtube."

We laugh and he says "yeah everyone says this Madison is a tremendous deal."

So, I go about two blocks, trackstand at a red light, look both ways, nobody around so I pop through the red light. I get about a half block and a San Jose Police car waves me over to the curb. "Oh this is just great, I'm gonna get busted for running that light."

So out from the driver's seat hops this very svelte and attractive young female officer about 30 maybe and as she walks around the back of the car towards me she smiles, waves her hand and says "No, No, I'm not busting you for that light, but what kind of bike is that?"

Totally true story, we chat about the bike...but damn think I shoulda asked for her phone number?

Norway Schwinn Distributor Beach Mountain Merges with Impulse Fitness

Since 2003, Beach Mountain AS and Impulse Fitness AS have shared certain resources, such as financing and logistics. Both companies can look back at a period of growth working together, but looking forward an even closer relationship is clearly beneficial.

Based on this, the decision to perform a merger between the two companies, effective January 1st 2007 was made. As of today, the merger has been completed, and important improvements are already in progress. Some of the most important aspects of the merger:

- Better structured and more effective administration of the companies

- Shared resources in warehousing and logistics

"Rocky Balboa" opens Wednesday, with a 60-year-old Sylvester Stallone reprising the role for which he became famous. Given that each Rocky movie has been worse than the previous one, this seems like the most unnecessary sequel in movie history. Well, until they release "Gigli II."

But the new Rocky film got us thinking. What other sports movies are well past their shelf life for sequels? We present the following pitches and await your green light.

BREAKING AWAY 2: BREAKING WIND

VOICE-OVER: In 1979, they took our breath away by winning Indiana's Little 500. Now, 27 years later, the Cutters are back in the saddle for the greatest bike ride of all.

CYRIL: Oooh-la-la. Talk about your mountain stages. I wouldn't mind bonking in those Pyrenees.

[Cut to the middle-aged CYRIL, MIKE, DAVE and MOOCHER sitting around the old rock quarry. Instead of swimming in it, they are drinking beer and tossing in their empties.]

MIKE: Let me get this straight. Some guy from Schwinn wants the Cutters to reunite to ride in the Tour de France. Says a team of lovable, middle-aged underdogs is just what the Tour needs after all the recent drug scandals. So even though we haven't done a race in three decades, he wants us to enter the most grueling event in sports. Ride 2,200 miles over 8,000-foot mountains, in the baking heat and the pouring rain. At our age. In our condition. [He stares at DAVE.]

DAVE: Yeah, that's about the size of it. So have you got any concerns?

[MIKE, MOOCHER and CYRIL look at each other for a moment.]

CYRIL: Just one.

DAVE: Yeah, what is it?

CYRIL: Do we really have to wear spandex? I mean, I don't know about you, but Mike has really let himself go.

[Cut to close-ups of the four, each sweating profusely, breathing heavily and in considerable agony. The camera then pulls back to show that they're not only riding Schwinns, they're riding Schwinn Sting-rays with banana seats and sissy bars.]

MIKE: I get the idea that we're supposed to be underdogs. But couldn't they at least have given us road bikes?

CYRIL: Consider yourself lucky we're not delivering newspapers.

[Cut to DAVE racing up Alpe d'Huez, dramatically passing biker after biker, then donning the yellow jersey at the end of the stage. MOOCHER pulls him aside.]

MOOCHER: Bad news Dave. The test results just came back.

DAVE: Anything the matter?

MOOCHER: Yeah, you tested positive for having a baseball card clipped to your spokes so that it would sound like a motorcycle so you would go faster.

Man Riding 23-year-old Schwinn Across U.S. for his Son

Frank Wootten, of Hooksett, NH, is riding his 23-year-old Schwinn Tempo bike from St. Augustine, Fla. to La Jolla, Cali. via Adventure Cycling's Southern Tier route. Wootten is raising awareness and funds for a hereditary degenerative neuropathy called Friedrich's Ataxia, from which his son suffers. (See www.ataxia.org for more info.)

I am hoping that through my cycling I can help my son and many others who suffer from this horrible disorder, said Wootten.

Wootten has created a blog to publicize his trip, which began Dec. 3. He plans to arrive in La Jolla on Jan. 12, 2007.

It's 3,116 miles altogether via Adventure Cycling's Southern Tier route, writes Wootten. I'll be carrying rear panniers only, along with a knapsack containing a hydration bladder and sundries, and a tarp and ground cloth mount under my aerobars.

Total gear weight is only 30 lbs, thanks to ultralight gear and minimalist packing. I've just put new wheels and tires on the bike and it rides beautifully, that rugged alloy steel frame handling the load with no problem at all.

Schwinn Rider Darren Lill Takes his Peloton LTD to Victory

Darren Lill took his Schwinn Peloton LTD to victory this weekend. In fact, Lill and the rest of the South African National team enjoyed a successful campaign at the African Continental Championships in Mauritius. The team, led by manager Tony Harding, took nearly all the accolades at the Championships.

In the Road Race category, Darren Lill was the first to cross the line for the men and Yolandi du Toit for the ladies. Lill is also the first South African to join the American pro race team, the Navigators.

Schwinn's new line of electric bikes, based on the "Plug'n Drive" system, are looking rather slick with their retro digs, but the tucked-away internals are the real story for out-of-shape or long-distance pedal pushers who don't want to give anything away.

The bikes feature a roughly 40-mile range lithium polymer battery, tucked under the cargo rack, and weigh 40-45 pounds total, with about 10 pounds of that being the power components.

You can get a full charge in about 4 hours, and the in-hub motor is about as inconspicuous as you can get. No word on price, or when exactly this 2007 lineup is going to hit the market, but we're definite fans so far.

Schwinn road team news from South Africa

Courtesy of CyclingNews.com: Capetonian Darren Lill will bring his racing skills to the American Navigators professional team where he hopes to excel in the hillier races in Europe and America next year.

Lill will be the first South African to join the American outfit, and he epitomises the ever-growing talent of South African riders as well as the growing popularity of the sport in his country.

Lill, who previously rode for Barloworld, HSBC and Microsoft, was left without a contract at the end of the 2006 season.

He missed the opportunity to sign for a European Continental Team this year due to discussions being opened with a bigger outfit, only to see the deal fall through at the last minute and too late to find another team for 2006.

Darren split his time between racing for Schwinn in his native South Africa and the National team in international events such as the Tour de Langkawi, Tour of Qinghai Lake and the World Championships.

Lill is "happy to have signed a contract with Navigators for 2007" and he is looking forward to meeting his new team-mates and racing both in Europe and the US with Navigators. Darren also wishes to thank Schwinn and Uvex for their support in 2006.

Lill had offers from other teams for 2007 but after many conversations with Navigators staff decided that the American team would be best suited to his development and his future in the sport.

Schwinn Supports Project Rwanda

Project Rwanda is focused on developing and delivering load-bearing utility bicycles to the coffee farmers of Rwanda, a country rebuilding its economic base and morale following the 1994 genocide. Project leader Tom Ritchey is partnering with Schwinn engineers to bring this utility bike to market for Rwanda in the spring of 2007. Thanks to the generosity of Schwinn, several Rwandan bicyclists were able to participate in the first annual Wooden Bike Classic on September 16, 2006.

As if we weren't getting enough exercise already, these electric bikes from Schwinn are going to push us over the pound cake precipice into the valley of cheese doodles and s'mores below. The bikes have a Plug'n Drive system which charges in four hours and gets around 40 miles (more if you actually pedal hard).

The Schwinn weighs around 40-45 pounds and the battery is held behind the seat, under the cargo-area. At first glance it's hard to see that this is an electric bike, which is probably the intent. Nobody wants to be congratulated for biking only to have your congratulator say, "oh, it's an electric."

Classic Schwinn is Boise Mayor's Favorite Vehicle

Maybe we all would look forward to going to work if we could kick start our day this way.

I'm talking about the way Boise Mayor Dave Bieter gets to work, He uses a classic vehicle.

Is it a '65 Mustang? Or a '57 Chevy? Nope. It's a '69 Typhoon.

"It's pretty cool that it's still running," the mayor says.

There's not exactly a wave of Typhoons still on the road.

"It actually does pretty well."

If you're struggling to picture what a Typhoon looks like, it's not made by any of the major auto makers. A Typhoon was a bicycle made by Schwinn.

"It's good for cruisin' around and.. it makes it pretty fun."

Bieter's bike may be decades old, but it's still oh so special to the mayor.

"Well, this was actually my very first bike," Bieter says. "I got this when I was 10-years-old for my 10th birthday."

That's right. The bike he still rides today is also his very first bike.

"It fell into disrepair some years back," he says. "But, my cousin, Tim Donahue, is pretty much a whiz with a bike, and he got it running again. And that's been - geez - 10 or 15 years ago now. Besides some flat tires and other than that it's running well."

Okay -- the bike's paint job has faded a bit. But, the mayor's memories of his bike are still as clear today as they were in '69.

"I mean most people were riding Stingrays, and this could beat a Stingray hands down. I could beat about anything around at the time."

Today, Bieter has the bike seat raised up as high as it can go.

"Plus, it's just practical. It's pretty good just around town."

But, he says he wouldn't want to whistle on his way to work any other way than two-wheeling on his Schwinn (By the way, he really did whistle, hum & sing while riding his bike on the day we joined him).

"I think there's more steel in this bike then there is in most cars now," Bieter says.

The mayor says he occasionally he gets offers from people to buy his '69 Typhoon. But, he says the bike is not for sale.

"I guess if you hold something long enough, it comes back into style because younger kids will stop me and yell out 'Nice bike."

Now, the mayor hopes more people will turn toward alternative forms of getting around.

"Even small percentages would be a big help. In terms of air quality and even traffic as well. So, Boise is known as a good biking town And I think that's becoming even more true. And, I think whatever we can do to encourage that we sure ought to."

Whether or not others will sing the same tune remains to be seen. But, you can bet Bieter's vintage bike will bring the mayor more happiness for years to come.

"And it really just reminds you of a lot of good things."

Veteran Riding Schwinn, Raising Awareness for Troops

In the movie "Forrest Gump," the title character, played by Tom Hanks, decides "for no particular reason" to go for a run one day. By the time he finishes his run, he has crossed the United States multiple times.

One could compare Forrest Gump with Bob Brown, 46, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who is planning to cross the United States on a bicycle. What makes Brown's journey different from Gump's is Brown has a reason to travel across the country, and it is very particular.

"Write to the soldiers. Soldiers need us to write to them so they know that someone cares about them," Brown said. "That's my biggest message. Write, write, write, write, write."

Brown feels so strongly about his message because he is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War and the 1989 Panama conflict.

"A lot of soldiers over there have no one write to them. I was one of them. No one wrote. Everyone said 'I'm too busy' or 'I thought so and so was going to write to you,'" Brown said.

Brown said writing letters is important because soldiers fighting overseas are facing death everyday, and they need to know someone back in the U.S. cares enough about what they are doing to write.

He began his journey on the first day of July from Crystal River, Fla., and has slowly but steadily crept northward.

He spent his 46th birthday traveling up U.S. 431, stopping for the night at Lake Wedowee Motel and Cabins, where he slept in a camper and worked the next morning to earn a little money before leaving in the afternoon.

Brown has ridden an aged, red Schwinn bicycle for the entire journey so far. "I'm riding the best-made American bicycle, Schwinn. This is an old Collegiate Schwinn," Brown said.

He hopes to get enough publicity from his ride for Schwinn to provide him with parts for the upkeep of his bicycle. The tires looked worn from the journey, and Brown said he has lost one of his brakes.

Three small American flags are tied to the bicycle in various places, and a pink cloth bag carrying most of his belongings is tied on over the back wheel. "Support Our Troops" is written on the bag in black marker.

He keeps a small radio and headphones attached to the handlebars for something to listen to while on the road.

"The only way I can get recognition by folks is to ride a bicycle because no one sees a motorcycle and cares; no one sees a truck and cares," Brown said. "They see a bicycle like this, and it catches attention, and I can put my message out."

For his basic needs, Brown relies on the kindness of people he meets along the way. If he needs money for food or supplies, he stops at local businesses to ask if he can pick up odd jobs for a few hours.

He also stops at churches to camp out, and sometimes, church members will get him a hotel room or even let him sleep in the sanctuary. Policemen in some towns have also given him assistance.

"People have been fantastic," Brown said.

For those still wondering why Brown is going north to travel across the nation, he is stopping by Piedmont, Ala., to visit his mother and then traveling up to Ithaca, N.Y., to visit the parents of a friend who died in Desert Storm.

From Ithaca Brown will begin his transcontinental trek, which he hopes to end in Seattle, Wash.

He will not be done then, though. From Seattle Brown will continue to bike south along the West Coast and will finally finish up in Studio City, Calif.

From there, who knows? Brown said he might stay in California, or he might come back east.

"If I can get involved with more veterans who are interested in doing what I'm doing, I'll just keep on traveling," Brown said.

Brown said two events during his trip have been really special to him so far.

The first occurred in Monticello, Ga., when he had stopped at a church to rest. He met a woman who bought him groceries, gave him $15 and treated him to dinner at Golden Corral.

The second was in Eufala, Ala., where a woman told him about her brother who had died in World War II, but she never got the opportunity to write him to say how much she loved him. She gave him $100 for his mission.

Though he is only in the early stages of his journey, Brown has little doubt he will complete it. He keeps a small copy of the New Testament in his back pocket that he says helps keep him peddling.

So do not be surprised if you travel to a faraway state this summer and see a man on an old bicycle sprinkled with flags peddling down the highway. Slow down and give him a honk and a wave for encouragement, for he probably has many miles yet to go before his journey ends.

Happen by Tully's on Market Street in Ballard on most (nonrainy) afternoons, and you're bound to spot whichever old-school Schwinn Sting-Ray bicycle Gary John has decided to ride over and park in front of the coffee shop that day. Perhaps it's the green "Pea Picker" or the yellow "Lemon Peeler," or one of his J-38s, in Flamboyant Lime, Opal Violet, or Radiant Coppertone, tricked out with a Mattel Vroom motor, Wham-O wheelie bar, curb feeler, towering sissy bar, Exxon tiger tail, and a color-coordinated Rat Fink charm dangling from the handlebars.

The gregarious, fortysomething John, an illustrator/collage artist and lifelong Ballardite, can usually be found sitting at one of the tables a few yards away, sporting a gray-flecked beard and wraparound shades, keeping an eye on his two-wheeled baby. Passersby stop to gawk at John's bike, maybe even snap a photo.

"People are astoundedthey tell me they haven't seen one of these things in 30 years," says John, who, over the past several years, has become one of the nation's premiere collectors and restorers of vintage '60s and '70s bikes. "I love seeing all the reactions and hearing all the experiencesthe guy who flew over the handlebars and broke all his teeth out, or the lady who told me that her brother had posed on these bikes for Schwinn ads in the late '60s."

John's passion and obsession for bikes was born from one of his biggest childhood disappointmentsgrowing up in a family of limited means, he had to settle for a Sears Spyder, a Sting-Ray knockoff. "Every kid wanted the Sting-Ray, but . . . they were like a hundred dollars, and then the accessories you had to put on 'em jacked the cost up even more." So when in 2000, as a financially secure adult, he stumbled across a '68 Orange Krate Sting-Ray that was for sale, he immediately snatched it up. "I couldn't have one when I was a kid, and it was a chance to redeem that. Obviously you can't go back, but one time not that long ago I pedaled up to 7-Eleven and got a Slurpee, and I was sitting on the curb with my Sting-Ray bicycle behind me, and right there, at that moment, I was 12 years old again."

Since then, John's amassed an impressive fleet of rare bikesnearly 180 of them, he estimatesthat includes numerous Sting-Rays (most from between 1963 and 1971), a '69 Murray Eliminator, a '67 Columbia Playbike, a '69 Huffy Slingshot, and a redonkulously cool '62 Schwinn Corvette that he's rigged with a small propane tank so that huge flames can shoot out of rear "exhaust pipes."

One of his bikes even deploys a parachute. Along with partner Brian Legresley (the duo refer to themselves as the "Classic Bicycle Club"), John restores the bikes to their original glory in a secret Seattle warehouse; lately, they've also been building small wooden hydroplanes to be dragged behind the bikes, re-creating a Pacific Northwest fad of the '50s and '60s. Though John is coy about revealing how much his bikes are worth, a poke around the Internet finds the going price for some of the same vintage modelsin less pristine shape than John'sstretching into the several thousands.

John, accompanied by his Siamese cat, drives around the country hunting for bikes and accessories (he's deathly afraid to fly); a three-year quest for orange sparkle brake grips for his Orange Krate recently came to an end when he discovered a set at a Florida swap meet.

John's bikes have been featured in numerous hot rod and retro-themed magazines, and they often steal the show when he puts them on display at big annual auto and bicycle expos (his next big show is the Hot Rod-A-Rama in Tacoma on Aug. 4).

John exhibits and rides his bikes but he won't sell them, no matter how much cash he's offered or whatever story he's approached withsuch as the guy who came up to John at one show nearly in tears, explaining that he'd had the same Apple Krate Sting-Ray as a kid but it'd been stolen from his yard, and for decades he'd dreamed of replacing it.

"I just have to tell them 'No.' I can relate to how they feel, but selling's never an option. Once I get them in my grasp, I just never wanna let them go. When I say I love these bikes with every beat of my heart, I truly mean it."

Schwinn Donates Sting-Rays to LeBron James Foundation

Pacific Cycle donated 300 Schwinn Sting-Rays to the second-annual LeBron James "King for Kids" Bikeathon, which took place on Saturday, June 24 in Akron, Ohio.

The bikeathon is a fundraiser benefitting the James Family Foundation, the Akron YMCA and the Akron Urban League. LeBron James is one of the NBA's most popular and talented athletes, and plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team.

The foundation was started by James and his mother, Gloria James. Neither receives a salary from the foundation. The event awards bicycles and helmets to underprivileged children who have shown particularly strong character.

In addition to the live event, Microsoft, the event's main sponsor, broadcast the bikeathon live to 465 million views in a worldwide Webcast.

Last year about 1,500 people took part in the 8-mile ride, and 200 area children received free Schwinn Sting-Rays and helmets. This year 300 children were given Schwinn Sting-Rays. One boy, a star student, was selected to appear with LeBron James in Microsoft Webcam promoting the event, and riding a Schwinn Sting-Ray. LeBron presented the bike to the boy.

Tylan, who just completed third grade at Case Elementary School, got to star with LeBron James in a Microsoft Windows Web-cam spot using a Schwinn Sting-Ray to promote Saturday's King for Kids Bikeathon.

"As Tylan was being interviewed, LeBron James rode out on his bike (a Schwinn Sting-Ray)," Tylan's mother, Yvonne Bryant said. "Tylan looked up at him, but turned back to continue the interview. He's focused like that."

"But he was so excited to meet LeBron, who presented him with the bike he will ride in the race," she said. Tylan rode along with James in the one-mile kids' ride, which is part of a Microsoft video. ###

Team Schwinn rider TJ Lavin was in Riverside,CA attending the 1st annual Stephen Murray Jam. TJ will be heading out to film the 3rd episode of the Guantlet 3 in Brazil.You could tell he wanted to have one last great session with his freinds before he leaves. TJ was going crazy pulling huge 360 superman seat graps over the massive jumps in Murray's front garden. TJ loves to ride dirt and you could tell by the smile on his face. Name of Product: Schwinn Deluxe Bicycle Child Carriers

Units: About 14,000

Manufacturer: PTI Sports Inc., of Coral Gables, Fla.

Hazard: If the seat is not fully seated on the rack, the plastic guide tabs on the carrier can break. If these tabs break, it could cause the seat to fall off. This poses a risk of serious injury to a child seated in the carrier.

Incidents/Injuries: PTI Sports has received five reports of the bicycle child carriers falling, including three reports of minor injuries, such as bumps and scratches.

Description: The carrier is a seat for a child that is attached to the back of an adult bicycle. The carrier is gray plastic with a blue rubber back and seat pad, a gray head rest, and black straps. Model number SW571T is printed on the carriers packaging and in the owners manual. PTI is printed on a yellow warning sticker on the back of the carrier seat.

Sold at: Department stores, discount department stores, and military exchanges nationwide from September 2004 through November 2005 for about $50.

Schwinn Sponsored UW Madison Cycling Team Wins Conference Championships

The UW Madison Cycling team put on an impressive performance last weekend as they dominated their races at the regional championships, hosted by the University of Illinois on April 22-23, thereby claiming the Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference Championship.

Arriving with a team of 40 racers for the weekend, easily the most out of any school, the UW Cycling Team competed in the team time trial, criterium, and road race events in all four category levels -ranging from first time racers in Category D, to elite racers in Category A.

The team time trial event kicked the weekend off on Saturday morning, April 22nd, and the several UW teams started the weekend off strong. Men's A racers Fred Jacobsen, Ryan Bauman, Rich Hatch, and Dave Hatch rode a superb time trial and won the event. The men's C racers also scored an overall team win, with every other UW team placing second in their respective categories.

In the criterium race later Saturday afternoon, UW cycling continued to put up top results in every race. Highlights included Steve Scholzen sprinting for 3rd place in the men's A race, and Kelli Hayes and Casey Cessna making the selection for 3rd and 6th, respectively, in the women's A race.

Sunday's road race was where the UW Madison team really proved that they deserved to win the conference championships. Dave Madden and Ted Durkee took 1st and 2nd place for UW in the men's C race, and the men's B team saw Corey Behrens take 5th place even with a flat tire. In an exciting finale, UW riders Kelli Hayes and Dave Hatch won the women's A and men's A road races respectively, propelling UW Madison up into first place in the team omnium standings!

This is the first year that UW Madison has ever won the MWCCC Conference Championships - and it is an accomplishment that they will surely fight to defend every year after this. By winning the conference title, UW Madison also earned a spot to race in the 2006 Collegiate Road National Championships. Men's A riders Steve Scholzen, Fred Jacobsen, Ryan Baumann, Steve Knurr, Dave Hatch, and Rich Hatch, as well as women's A riders Mary Coats, Casey Cessna, and Kelli Hayes will all travel to Lawrence, Kansas May 10-14 to compete in the National Championship.

Schwinn Sponsored UW Cycling Team First Race of Season

While students were sleeping in or maybe hitting the library on Saturday and Sunday morning of this past weekend, the UW Madison Cycling Team was rising at 6AM in Indiana to compete in their first cycling races of the spring collegiate road season.

The road race on Saturday and the fast-paced criterium (sort of like NASCAR on bikes) on Sunday were hosted by Depauw University in below-freezing temperatures, and the riders, representing schools from all over the Midwest Conference, were all smiles.

With 25 riders representing the UW team, an impressive amount for the very first weekend, the Badgers demonstrated their competitiveness with high finishes in each race. Highlights included Casey Cessna in the womens A and Ryan Baumann in the mens B category road races of Saturday, both of whom placed 5th in their race. Sundays criterium races saw the UW mens B team put on a clinic as Ryan Baumann and Eric Dier grabbed the 1 and 2 spots respectively. Many other UW riders placed well in their categories, and if this is any sign of things to come for the UW Cycling Team, then were in for an exciting season.

If Gnarly Nate was going to have his best race weekend of the season, the ABA Grands sure was a good place to do it. Nate was ON FIRE all weekend, winning lap after lap and wowing the crowd with tons of style over the many tricky jumps on the track. What a showman.

He did really well to make it to the AA Pro main, where he finished a very respectable 5th place for the day. Not wanting to end it there, Nate had a convincing win in the Pro Open class, as he won from wire to wire. VERY IMPRESSIVE. Congratulations Nate, on a job well done.

NBL Grand Nationals

Nate came to the 2005 NBL Grands in hopes of having an awesome performance and moving up in the Elite Mens point standings. He looked really good in practice with fast first straights and smooth style around the track. He even wowed the crowd with an amazing back flip over the pro section jump!

He raced well in the heat races with strong finishes but it wasnt enough to get him into the main events. The fans still love and support Nate. That was evident with all the autographs he signed and all the Schwinn stickers and Schwinn water bottles he handed out. All in all, it was a pretty good weekend for Nate Dawg Berkheimer.

Look for Nate and his Schwinn Sting bike at the next event, the UCI Supercross in San Jose, CA on September 9th, which is being taped for NBC.

Back for a second year, the Schwinn Stunt Team joined forces with the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee August 4-14th. Many fans from last year rejoined the team along with tons of new faces proving this event a must see for action sports fans and fair-goers alike. The Schwinn Stunt Team filled the massive piece of Wisconsin real estate with an eleven foot tall half-pipe, an eight foot tall quarter-pipe, and a twenty-five foot long box jump. Mat Sager, Adam Strieby, Coco Zurita, Cesar Flores, and hometown flavor Dan Sieg provided a staggering dose of high flying BMX action while Bo Wade served up the more technical flatland for the rowdy Wisconsin fans. These guys absolutely threw down with every variation of jumping tricks on the box jump including 360 tailwhips, double tailwhips, decades, bike flips, front flips, and backflip-tailwhips. Mat Sager and Coco Zurita showed the fair crowd the vert side flying up to ten feet above the massive eleven foot tall ramp and ripping off tricks like tailwhips, 540s, and flairs. Crowds packed the bleachers hours before each show and autograph sessions lasted well over an hour after each show. The Wisconsin State Fair is a top notch event and the Schwinn Stunt Team looks forward to another smashing success in 2006.

The weather was looking a little rough on Saturday for the Pro Vert comp so the Riders knew that their qualifying runs could be there final run and that was just the case.

Schwinn's Tom Stober put in a great ride with a huge no handed flair. That kept Tom on top of the board for a while but after all of the other riders put in some kick butt he slipped back to sixth.

Tom is ready for more action next week at the Denver stop of the Dew Action Sports Tour.

NBL Hoosier Nationals

Nate is just back in the US from a strong performance at the UCI event in Switzerland. He was set and ready to turn in a podium packed weekend when it all went bad.

In practice on Saturday his chain derailed just before the first jump as he stacked it up and went down hard. He tried to race the rest of the weekend, but with a swollen knee, it was just too difficult to be much of a threat. Hopefully, with a few days rest, hell be ready for the next event.

Nate was super stoked with the track at the UCI facility and was ON FIRE once he got on it. With the skill that Nate has, he was a sure pick to qualify for the main event. He didnt disappoint. He rode strong and fast with style and finesse.

Along with a respectable 6th in the main event, Nate also signed tons of autographs and handed out lots of hero cards and Schwinn stickers.

LG Action Sports Tour

The Pro Vert Finals were held on Sunday night in Olympia Park in Munich, Germany.

Schwinn rider Tom Stober is coming of a knee injury but no one could tell by by the way he rode. His big no handed flair put him in 5th place for the night. Nice job Tom!

Tom is currently traveling to compete this weekend at the Paris stop of the LG Tour.

Dew Action Sports Tour - Stop #1 Vert Finals

Despite a knee injury, Tom Stober rode like a champ during the Vert Finals on Sunday night in Louisville, Kentucky. He finished fourth place in the open qualifiers which put him in a nice place for the prelims.

Nate rode strong and hard this last weekend at the ABA Spring Nationals in Roseville, CA. Only ONE POINT kept him from the main events on Saturday. Sunday he was in the mix as he finished in the number 6 spot for the day.

Mobile Skatepark Series

The weekend went really well. Tom Stober (Team Schwinn) and Simon Tabron (Team Mongoose) had a good day of practice on Saturday for the Mobile Skatepark Series in Cincinnati, OH. During and after practice, they hung out in the booth all weekend signing autographs and hanging out with the fans.

On Sunday, May 28th the vert finals were held. The finals started out with a scare when Tom missed his bars on a bar spin and hung front wheel coming in on his head. It took a few minutes to shake it off. We straightend out the bike and he went up for his second run. Tom's second run was going very well until he went down again, this time he would call it quits. The medics took good care of him and I was glad Jamie Forrest (Schwinn's Photographer) was there to look after him, since I was stuck in the booth.

With a little ice on the knee, he will be ready for the NBC Dew Action Sports Tour next week.

It was another great day for Schwinn as Tom Stober placed 9th, despite his injuries.

The folks from LG took the guys out for dinner to celebrate. I had a lot of positive feedback from the Photographers and the people from LG letting me know how profesional our guys are and how nice it was to work with them. So all in all another great week.

Schwinn Stunt Show visits Montreal for Dorel

The Schwinn Stunt Team made the long trip up to Montreal, QC to take part in Dorel's AGM 2005. Mat Sager, Billy Gawrych, Ommar Estrada, and Cesar Flores were on hand throwing down everything from Flatland to Lip-Tricks to High Airs. Cesars even threw out one of his signature moves, the one-hander lander to handlebar-to-the neck jump. Everyone was amazingly responsive to the show and the riders had such a rad time. ABA Great Salt Lake Nationals

Super Nate was flat out hauling this past weekend in Salt Lake. He was looking good on Saturday for a main event showing when a slight mishap during qualifying caused him to miss the main event by just one position. Sunday would be a better day as he qualified for the AA Pro main. He rode strong and consistent, but unfortunately, it was at the rear of the super fast AA Pro pack.

LG World Tour Championships

The first stop of the LG World Tour Championships was held in Moscow, Russia this past weekend. Team Schwinn's Tom Stober had a great weekend. He ended up winning the Vert contest on Sunday pulling tricks like his first no-handed-flair ever and finished with a huge double tail whip. He was very happy to start his season with a win and is looking forward to the rest of the season. Look for more great stuff from Tom throughout the season...

Schwinn Stunt Team in Bike Safety/DARE

The Schwinn Stunt Team joined forces with the Simi Valley, CA Police and DARE officals on May 14 for a city-wide festival. The Police and DARE officers held a bicycle safety course for kids of all ages located along side the Stunt Show. It was an all day event and the crowd grew from just a few to several hundred by the end of the day. The officers were a huge part in this events success. Look for more events teaming up DARE, Bicycle Safety, and the Schwinn Stunt Show in the near future.

Happy Valley Tour

So I am in China with Cam White and Mat Sager.

And this place is crazy gnarly!

So far we have:
Flown 15 hours, tranferring planes in Beijing where no one speaks any English, then drove 2 hours with the Michael Schumacher of China overtaking people on the on-ramps and blitzing the toll booths.

Visited the Theme Park where the competition is being held and met some of the most important people of China who own most of everything.

Slept in the hardest most uncomfortable bed ever in the smallest hotel room with Cam White.

Signed a lot of autographs.

Ridden to and from hotel to park about 100 times.

Been to Wal-mart several times and 7-11 once.

Watch numerous children urinate on the sidewalks while their parents wait and watch.

Been attacked by a group of young Chinese girls who kept saying "you are so so handsome".

Posed for a lot of photos.

Eaten a lot of Chinese food including stuff that I didn't know was food.

Been to McDonalds and ordered a water only to receive an ice cream cone.

Ridden at the Ceremonies of the Opening of the 2005 Happy Valley Extreme Sports in front a massive Chinese crowd.

Steaked out the guy who stole Cam's phone and wallet. The guy never showed, but it is far from over.

And it is only day 2 of 8....

And we are the only white people in China at the moment.

And this is the most humid place I have ever been, ever.

And the Sushi sucks, but the noodles rule.

NBL Jackpot Nationals

Nate Berkheimer got to show off his skills this weekend on his hometown track at the NBL Jackpot Nationals. He was going extremely fast and finished up front in almost every moto. Nate was getting tons of crowd support and didnt let them down as he finished with a strong performance in Elite Open on Saturday.

Sunday didnt go as well for Nate as he failed to make it into the Elite Mens main event or Elite Open.

Look for Nate at the next ABA National in San Bernadino, CA on April 30th through May 1st.

Schwinn Stunt Show at Dallas Supercross

The Schwinn Stunt Show was on hand Saturday April 2nd in Dallas, TX for the AMA Supercross. 43,000 people filled Texas Stadium and over 15,000 of them joined us in the PIT area throughout the day to see the Schwinn riders.

The Schwinn Stunt Team is out promoting the Mountain Dew Action Sports Tour coming to NBC this year. Be sure to tune in to NBC and see members of the Schwinn Stunt Team competing for a top spot at the Dew Action Sports Tour events.

NBL Gator Nationals

Nate Berkheimer traveled to Florida last weekend to race in the NBL Gator Nationals. He was looking really fast and strong on one of the most technically challenging tracks on the NBL circuit. Unfortunately for Nate, he took a nasty fall in one of the Open heat races and hit his head really hard, thus ending his day. Looking like he may have to sit out the Sunday event, Nate sucked it up, dealt with the headache and sprained thumb and actually won his semi final to earn a spot in the tough Elite Mens main event. A good start and a good first straight put him up front in turn one, but just then, a tangle with another rider dropped him way back. He rode a good lap after that and ended up with a sixth place for the day. He did a great job for any rider, much less, one with a bad thumb and a pounding head.

Look for Nate at the next ABA National in Beaumont, TX on April 16-17.

Schwinn Launches Motor Scooter Line

Schwinn Bicycle Company is proud to announce its latest venture, Schwinn Motor Scooters. Schwinn the 105-year-old manufacturer of the best known and most respected brand in bicycles will introduce the first models of its new line of four-stroke gas-powered motor scooters at the 2005 Dealernews International Powersports Dealer Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana (booth #6834).

Schwinn will launch three 50cc models, the Schwinn Campus, the Schwinn Collegiate and the Schwinn Graduate at the Expo, February 19-21. Each model is currently available in two colors and will feature the Schwinn Quality Seal.

Schwinn Announces 2005 Team

SCHWINN Stunt Show at Anaheim Supercross

The SCHWINN Stunt Show was on hand Saturday February 5 in Anaheim for the Supercross. Almost 50,000 people filled Angel's Stadium and over 15,000 of them joined us in the PIT area throughout the day to see the SCHWINN riders.

Cesar Flores, Mark Kehl were some of the riders ripping out 720s, supermans, 360-tailwhips, backflip-tailwhips, and many other aerial stunts. The team also appeared at the previous Anaheim SX as well as the San Francisco SX the week prior.

TJ Lavin made the trip out from Las Vegas to help promote the Dew Action Sports Tour coming to NBC this year. He stood in the infield of Angels Stadium and spoke to the massive amounts of SX fans and soon joined them to watch the SX action.

Schwinn has signed on as a associate sponsor of the Dew Action Sports Tour, the first-ever, season-long multi-sport professional tour in action sports.

A series of five major, multi-sport Tour events, the 2005 Dew Action Sports Tour boasts the biggest competitive purse in action sports, a Million-Dollar Bonus Pool based upon year-end standings, and the largest network and cable television broadcasting commitment ever. In addition to the primary sports of skateboarding, BMX, and freestyle motocross, each tour stop will feature a unique specialty comp, such as snowboarding or wakeboarding.

BMX Dirt Superstar TJ Lavin to Participate in Hollywood Charity Event

Schwinn athlete and Dirt Jump BMX star TJ Lavin will be among the celebrities attending the Bogart Backstage benefit on Saturday, Oct. 16. The Bogart Pediatric Cancer Research Progam is dedicated to funding cutting edge, bench-to-bedside research at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

Im excited to participate in the Bogart Backstage benefit, said Lavin. Cancer research is very important to me and being a part of this means a lot. It really hits home as my father has lung cancer. Everyday he stays alive is a day closer to a cure.

Other celebrities in attendance include cast members from television shows: The Quintuplets; Reba; Bernie Mac; Malcolm in the Middle; 7th Heaven; Smallville; Club House; Jack and Bobby; What I Like About You; Nickelodeon; and My Wife and Kids.

Day 2 @ Gravity Games

Its Day 2 of the 2004 Gravity Games here in Cleveland Ohio.
Dirt prelims and finals went down today and team Schwinn's TJ Lavin looking to try and take a podium position.
Rain very nearly stopped the comp when a huge thunderstorm hit the dirt halfway through prelims. It was decided that the final would be run with all 20 competitors riding.
TJ is always one of the hot favourites due to his ability to pull tricks out of the bag just when everyone least expects it and tonight was no exception. TJ let lose with Flattie 3s, backflip variations and opposite 3s. TJ ended up finishing 6th.

First day at Gravity Games

Today saw the opening day of the Gravity Games here in Cleveland Ohio for Team Schwinn. Dirt practice started at 4 oclock and Schwinns TJ Lavin was out early checking out the huge dirt course built by Fuzzy Hall and Co. TJ is one of the crowds favourites and can always pull amazing runs out from nowhere when under pressure. Tomorrows final starts 8 pm EST. Over on the vert ramp Tom Stober was nursing a broken wrist from a double whip attempt at the LG games last weekend. Tom wont be competitive this weekend but will ride just for fun in Friday nights final. Expect the cast to be off sooner rather than later! Watch this space for Gravity Games news

AA pro racer Nate Berkheimer makes KOD finals

This past weekend was the 3rd and final stop of the KOD Core Tour in Huntington Beach, CA. Schwinn's, AA Pro, Nate Berkheimer went down there and entered the comp just to ride and have fun. The jumps were huge and there were a lot of top dirt jumpers in attendance, 31 riders to be exact.

After putting a few good runs together during qualifying, Nate ended up qualifying 6th into the finals beating out quite a few top guys. Nate competed in finals against the likes of Corey Bohan, Ryan Nyquist, Ryan Guetler, Luke Parslow, Cameron White, Mark Keul, Ronny Chalk, Rob Darden, and Colin Mackay.

Nate had a strong first run, not so hot in round 2, backed it up in round 3, and in the final round of the finals, Nate looped out on a 720 and crashed. 9th place in the finals for his first ever dirt contest isn't so bad though. Look for him to be at a lot more contests next year with team mate, TJ Lavin.

Stober and Lavin To Compete at 2004 Gravity Games

After a stunning bronze medal performance at X Games X, BMX dirt jump extraordinaire TJ Lavin will soon bring his A Game to the 2004 Gravity Games in Cleveland, Ohio. Fellow Schwinn teammate and test pilot Tom Stober will also compete in the BMX Bike Vert category.

Even after a recent broken collarbone, TJ amazed everyone by winning a bronze medal at the X Games, said Travis Chipres, Sports Marketing Director for Schwinn. Hes won gold at Gravity Games before and I think hes going to show the world he has ability to win anytime, anywhere.

Big Tom has a great combination of guts and strength, and were looking for a strong showing from him at the Gravity Games, continued Chipres. Its going to be fun to watch.

Schwinn riders will be signing autographs at the event and kids can ride Schwinn bikes on the on-dirt demo BMX track on Fri., Sat. and Sun. Schwinn will provide helmets and bikes.

The last NBL National before the 2004 NBL Grands was an up and down weekend for team AA Pro Nate Berkheimer.

On Saturday, as Nate was in 2nd, he crashed in the first turn so hard, his helmet came off and Nate got some road rash on his face. Ouch..

On Sunday though, Nate came back strong and made his way into the AA Pro main, placing 7th.

Team Schwinn Pro Nate Berkheimer powers is way into the Elite men's final.

Nate Berkheimer had a great day of racing, at the UCI World Championships today. Nate looked strong all day in the moto's and as the 1/8th finals started, he looked even better. Getting through the 1/4 finals as well as the semi, Nate had a chance to take home his first World Championship title.

As the Gate fell, Nate jumped to an early lead, but was just slightly boxed out of the lead going into the 1st turn. Nate would ride a great race and finish up 4th for the day and take home his best World Championship Elite finish of his career. All this on his new Schwinn Sting Prototype frame for the 1st race!

New York Core Tour and T-Mobile Ramps and Amps

TJ Lavin was back after 3 months of recovering from an separated shoulder he sustained whilst mountain biking in the spring. He had a lot of pressure going in to the event because he still needed to qualify for Gravity Games and this was the last chance. He stepped up and put in a solid ride to finish 4th and get the last and final Gravity spot and pulled a huge Decade over the last set to do it. Nice one TJ! Schwinn BMX Race Report NBL Pro Series, Round 6 Great Lakes Nationals Pontiac, Michigan Waterford Oaks BMX July 3-4 Nate Berkheimer loves BMX and for the past week, since the NBL Stars and Stripes National in South Park, PA He has been on the road traveling with Robbie Miranda in his moto home. The pair of Pros have been checking out the sites around the Midwest, visiting the local trails and tracks, and getting to meet tons of BMX fans. As they arrived at the Waterford Track, Nate got back to the Schwinn pits to display his Schwinn race bike, as well as talk to all the Schwinn race fans who were in awe of the 2 Sting Rays on display. As the races kicked off on Saturday, Nate rode well, but just missed out of making the AA Pro Main event. Nate did race his way into the Pro Open main event and rode a strong lap to a 4th place finish. Nate felt that he would be able to do better on Sunday, but unfortunately, rains came in and drowned out any chance of that, as the days race was canceled. Nate now goes back to Las Vegas and will get ready for the UCI World Championships in just 2 weeks time, in Holland.

Nate not only had time to make the main, but he was seen giving away all kinds of goodies to the kids and signing a ton of Autographs.

Nate looked like he was on to be in both the AA Pro main and Pro Open mains of Sunday, but a small bobble kept him out of the AA main, and a crash took him out of Pro Open. Vans Triple Crown - Denver

Schwinn Pro, TJ Lavin was on hand this past weekend at the Denver Stop of the Vans Triple crown.
Unable to ride, due a crash and injury he had sustained at Sea Otter in the spring. TJ tried his hand at Mountain Bike racing, in the downhill class at this springs Hyundai/Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, CA and one bad crash kept one of the worlds top riders off the dirt with a separated collar bone.
TJ has been doing a ton of rehab and is getting stronger and just began riding this past week at his own personal jumping oasis in Las Vegas.
TJ was busy at the event doing Autograph sessions for one of his sponsors, FORD, and a few interviews with the NBC people for lead ups for Gravity Games. Look for TJ to be going big once again very soon.

Schwinn bikes makes it presence know at the 2004 Hyundai/Sea Otter Classic with a huge display area and the presence of team riders Judd DeVall and TJ Lavin. With a new 20 x 20 tent display area, Schwinn was showing off a huge sample of its line of high quality bikes. A huge hit of the display area was the new Schwinn Sting ray bikes that had Schwinn fans staring and admiring the new look of the bikes.

Team Rider Judd DeVall took to the Downhill and Mountain Cross courses today and looks to have some great results on Sunday when the finials come for each event.

Pro Dirt Jumper TJ Lavin check out fine after a bad crash on the Downhill, but returned home to Las Vegas to recoup and get ready for the upcoming dirt jump event.

Schwinn AA BMX Pro Nate Berkheimer has a lot going on. Training, an interveiw in the new Transworld BMX magazine, hitting a full schedule of BMX races, heading off to the local skateparks and trails, and coming up with ideas to better promote Schwinn. The life of a BMX pro will keep a guy busy.

Schwinn BMX AA Pro Nate Berkheimer took to the Sarasota BMX track this past weekend for the 3rd round of the 2004 NBL National Pro Series.
After a week of riding all over Florida, Nate took to the BMX race track. Nate had some bad luck as a lot of crashed kept him from the main events, but Nate's dog Oscar kept the crowds close to the Schwinn Pit Area.

On Sunday, the addition of a new Schwinn Sting Ray bike, along with Nate and Oscar, the fans went crazy.

NBL Spring Break BMX race weekend #1- Schwinn BMX

Schwinn's Nate Birkheimer shines in Florida.

Team Schwinn BMX Pro Nate Birkheimer left the warm and flashy area of Las Vegas, NV to head on over to the 2nd round of the 2004 NBL National Pro Series. After a great opening round a few weeks ago in Boulder City, Nevada, Nate was looking to add on some more points in the Pro Class. As Nate arrived in Avon Park, FL he liked what he saw, as the track was fast and technical. And as the racing action took place, you could tell that he really like the track as he was one of the fastest riders on the track and was in the AA Pro main event both days.
Nate was consistent with his results, as he placed 4th both days. Nate will now be headed off all over Florida during the week hitting all the hot jumping spots and then make his way down to Sarasota this next weekend for the 2nd round of the NBL Spring Break tour. Look for Nate at all the NBL nationals this summer, as well as many of the ABA nationals.

Currently one of the worlds top dirt bike jumpers and most successful riders, TJ Lavin is a great role model for kids all over the world. TJ began his biking career as a BMX racer but found he was more comfortable in the air, as opposed to on the dirt. TJs first air competition was the first King of Dirt jumping contest held at the ABA Grand National BMX race, where he took home top honors and an even greater love for the sport. From that day on, TJ hasnt moved from the top, and for the past 10 years has been the man to beat at any dirt jump competition. A featured talent of the X-Games and Gravity Games, TJ has also shown his skills on numerous media appearances. TJ and his Schwinn signature model Schwinn will continue to amaze and shock the world for years to come.

Pro Street competitions have evolved into a compelling sport, and those who push their bikes to the limits are the ones to watch. Tom Stober is such a rider. A new face for Schwinn in 2004, Tom is a genuinely nice guy with an attitude for winning. Tom lives at the world famous Woodward Camp in Pennsylvania where he not only improves his own riding skills, but takes the time each summer to teach young BMX riders. In 2003, Tom was a finalist in both the X-Games and Gravity Games pro street competitions.

2004 also marks the comeback of the Schwinn BMX race team led by one of the hottest up-and-coming young pro riders, Nate Berkheimer. Nate has the skills to win an AA Pro BMX race. Look for Nate on the winners platforms at BMX races, and expect to see a lot of Schwinn in 2004.

Schwinn also has deep roots in the sport of mountain bike racing, having sponsored numerous past world champions. Schwinns approach to this sport not only stresses fierce competition, but a commitment to the environment as well. Judd DeVall, one of the sports newest faces, has helped take Schwinn back into the limelight of mountain bike racing and beyond. As a pro downhill and 4-Cross rider, Judd is committed to winning races and educating riders. By hosting various seminars and clinics, Judd is helping the next generation of mountain bike riders learn bike safety and wilderness preservation to keep trials open to riders.

Schwinn also boasts a traveling stunt show team that performs weekly at nationwide locations. Riders perform on a half-pipe, a quarter-pipe, a box jump and demonstrate flatland riding during the show to amaze both new and old BMX fans. NBL Jackpot National Race Report

The NBL kicked off its 2004 Pro Series season in Boulder City, NV this past weekend. Just 15 minutes outside of Las Vegas, the Boulder City track was as just as risky as a high dollar bet, with a tight, technical layout giving the best of riders troubles. With the NBL Pro series just consisting of 8 Pro weekends, each race is important to get a good score to go toward the overall #1 Pro title. On Saturday night, they also held a special Pro race, called the Double Down event. It put 2 riders on separate courses, simulating dual slalom racing. 32 riders would go and get qualifying times and then were bracketed up against each other to find the best rider of the night.

Nate Birkheimer has settled into his new role as the Schwinn AA Pro just right, as he was in 3 out of 4 main events this past weekend at the 1st NBL Pro series event for 2004. Boulder City, NV, just 15 minutes outside of Las Vegas was home to the event, as well as being just a few miles from Nate's house. The Boulder City track was super technical, and Nate seemed to have the track wired, as he was out front all weekend in qualifying moto's.

On Saturday Nate made it to the Pro Open finial and had a great come from behind race, where he would finish up 4th. On Sunday, with the Sun out shining, it looked down upon Nate, as a bad crash took him down early in qualifying, but he was able to come back and make both the AA Pro main and Pro Open. In AA, another crash held him back to 8th for the day, but in the Pro Open main, a clear run down the first straitaway, put him right up in the front of the pack. Nate rode a flawless race and would finish up 2nd overall.

Nate will be heading off to Washington in a few weeks for the next round of the AA Pro series.

Pacific Cycle acquired by Dorel Industries

that it is being acquired by Montreal-based Dorel Industries Ltd. (TSX: DII.A, DII.B; NASDAQ: DIIBF), a global supplier of juvenile and home furnishing products. Dorel has signed a purchase agreement to acquire the Madison-based Pacific Cycle, a leader in the design, marketing and distribution of high quality, branded bicycles and other recreational products. Dorels purchase of Pacific Cycle is expected to close later in January. Chris Hornung, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Cycle, will remain at the head of Pacific Cycle and will run the company as a standalone Dorel division.

Best known for its Schwinn, Mongoose and GT bicycle brands, Pacific Cycle sells more bicycles than any other company in North America. Its powerful brand portfolio serves virtually all consumer demographics, price categories and bicycling styles. Hornung said that the acquisition begins another exciting chapter in the companys corporate history. Pacific Cycle Donates Bikes to Help Fire Victims

In an effort to help Southern California families who were significantly affected by the recent fires, Pacific Cycle, the parent company of Schwinn, has made a donation of juvenile bicycles to the Red Cross.

These bikes will be distributed as part of Project: Ride On, a cooperative effort of the bicycle industry. The Red Cross is still responding to emergency needs for food, water and housing, but will soon shift to distribution of non-essential aid such as bicycles.
