Schwinn Sponsors NBA Star LeBron James Bikeathon
6/24/2005
Schwinn Bicycles is proud to announce its sponsorship of the LeBron James "King for Kids" Bikeathon on June 25 in Akron, Ohio. The event benefits the James Family Foundation and proceeds will also benefit YMCA and Urban League.
Celebrities and donors will ride with LeBron in an eight-mile bike tour throughout downtown Akron, Ohio beginning at 11am. 200 Children ages 8-11 will also participate in a one-mile children's ride beginning at 10am. Each of the 200 8-11 year-olds will ride a new Schwinn Sting-Ray one they can take home with them, courtesy of Schwinn Bicycles.
Were very excited to work with the LeBron James Foundation on such a fun and unique project, said Pacific Cycle Inc.s Senior Marketing Manager, Lori Heimerl. Pacific Cycle, a Dorel Industries, Inc. company, owns the Schwinn Bicycles brand. Its a great fit for Schwinn and I cant wait to see more than 200 lucky kids riding their new Schwinn Sting-Rays.
LeBron has always had a special connection with kids, and he will continue to support and encourage them to succeed, said Bikeathon executive director Chris Dennis. The Bikeathon primarily benefits youth and families in this community, and were very happy that Schwinn Bicycles has provided more than 200 new bicycles for these kids. It will be a very special day for them.
Celebrity participants include Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Garnett and Tracy McGrady. National media plan to cover the event, including CNN, ESPN, SI, People Magazine and extensive Ohio-area media coverage.
In February 2005, the 20 Street Series Sting-Ray was named the 2004 Outdoor Toy of the Year by the Toy Industry Association, Inc. That Sting-Ray model had sold nearly 600,000 units in less than a years time, making it what Schwinn believes to be the fastest selling bicycle in history.
The popular Schwinn Sting-Ray line has contributed significantly to Pacific Cycles publicly traded parent company, Dorel Industries Inc. (NASDAQ: DIIB; TSX: DII.MV; DII.SV).
When Schwinn Bicycles launched the new Schwinn Sting-Ray Street Series juvenile chopper bike in April 2004, the company knew it was on to something special. The first retailer to receive the bicycles sold what was thought to be a three-month allocation in one weekend. Soon, every retailer selling the new Schwinn Sting-Ray was asking for more Sting-Rays to meet unprecedented consumer demand.
Schwinn has introduced a variety of new models since the initial spring 2004 launch, including the Sting-Ray Electric, smaller 16 and 12 models, the Spoiler a larger, high spec model, limited edition models, and a scooter line that shares the styling of the chopper bicycles. Schwinn also re-issued highly collectable Classic Sting-Ray models, complete with banana seats and ape-hanger handlebars, including the Pea Picker and Grey Ghost models.
A full array of official Schwinn Sting-Ray parts and accessories including helmets, handlebar bags, gloves and more are available in mass retailers now, and additional custom parts such as light kits, mirrors, lights, tail pipes, and wheel spinners are available at independent bicycle dealerships.
