When in doubt:
If you're concerned about your bike's performance or just don't quite feel confident making your own adjustments, then take your bike to your local Schwinn dealer - they're always glad to see you and happy to help.

Before the season begins:
Just like you car requires a tune-up, bikes have parts that wear and need adjustment. Take your bike in to your local shop for a complete tune-up. Their mechanics can often spot small problems before they become major headaches on the road (worn chains, cracked tires, worn out brake pads etc.) A good tune-up includes tuning the shifting, adjusting worn brakes, truing wheels (taking the wobbles out) and checking for any repairs that need to be made.

NOTE: If you need to take your bike to a shop, make sure you allow a few days to a week turnaround for your bike to be tuned up or serviced - especially at the beginning of the season or prior to a large local event. Many dealers take appointments for servicing, so call ahead.
